Epilepsy
In EVREN’s founding year, Co-Presidents Aiza Awan and Naureen Othi found it important to focus on a neurological disorder that they had personal ties to. Naureen’s grandfather's life was forever altered in his late 60’s when he had his first seizure. He has since been diagnosed with Epilepsy and takes medication to manage his symptoms, which has allowed him to be seizure free for the last three years. However, there is still much left to discover about Epilepsy.
The Scope of Epilepsy
Delving deeper into epilepsy, it is not an uncommon, rather it impacts many people throughout the world. In fact, the estimated annual incidence is 85 per 100,000 people from the ages of 65-69 and 81 per 100,000 people over all age groups. The types of seizures that people with Epilepsy have and their intensity vary from person to person, and not everyone is made seizure free after receiving a specific medication plan like Naureen’s grandfather was.
Funding Research Through Epilepsy Canada
Everyday, more and more research is being conducted to find new treatments and hopefully, a cure for epilepsy but, this research needs substantial funds. Epilepsy Canada is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to positively impacting the lives of those living with epilepsy. Through its active financial support of epilepsy research, it strives to help the Canadian neurology community find a cure for epilepsy. EVREN hopes to make an impact in their mission with a goal of raising $4000 from Fall 2020 to Summer 2021.
